Hierarchy

The Third Terran Empire is a strict hierarchical society with the Emperor wielding absolute power. The subjects of the Imperium are kept in check by a cadre of nobles in absolute servitude to the Emperor. In exchange for loyalty, the Emperor grants these families vast swaths of territory and access to superior technology. Because of the Emperor's favor, these families live a life of opulence and influence. Those nobles that stray from the path quickly feel the sting of the Imperium Navy and have their access to the hyperspace navigation and communication network revoked. Without the support and protection of the Emperor, these families wither, and their territories are eagerly absorbed by their rivals.
